Human Rights Dept’s set-up soon

LAHORE: The Punjab government’s Human Rights Department is likely to be shifted to a new building in the next couple of days and a proper set-up including offices for the officers will be set up in the new building, sources in the department told Daily Times on Monday.

Currently, the department is operational in a rented house in Riwaz Gardens, and very few people know its location. The department is likely to be shifted by next week to a building on Egerton Road. The offices of the department’s secretary, director, deputy directors, section officers and other officials will be established in the new building.

A senior official of the department said the department would function efficiently once it was properly shifted to its own building. He conceded that currently the department had not delivered much on the human rights front. “We have dealt with minorities’ issues and are giving scholarships to the minorities. However, we have not done much on the human rights front, as we are under-staffed.”

He said the department did not have any proper network at the district levels and it would use various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to monitor and improve the situation of human rights over there.
